Fidalgo Island Rotary sponsored their first S.T.E.M Camp for middle school age students in the region. A program previously sponsored by the Anacortes Schools Foundation. The popular day-camp combined hands-on experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math — STEM. The idea is to break down the scary part (of STEM) and make it FUN!

This year Rotary's STEM Camp offered eight different workshops: Meteorology/Weather, Intro to Marine Biology, 3D Printers, Wood Turning, Kitchen Science, Architecture and Construction, Art and Science and Rockin' Recreation. Campers got to select two workshops to explore over a four-day period, one for the morning and another for the afternoon. Classes were limited to 12-15 campers; this gives the students the opportunity to study these fields more in-depth and gives the instructors more one-on-one time with the campers. Instructors include professional educators, a lifelong meteorologist, and architect builder, professional chef, local artists, and mentors. Three of the workshops were taught by members of Fidalgo Island Rotary.  "Our goal was to provide campers with fours days of comprehensive STEM classes plus a lot of outdoor experiences and FUN where they go home happy and exhausted.", commented Sarah Davies, Camp Supervisor and one of Fidalgo Island Rotary's new members.

The camp was Aug. 5-8, 2019, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at the Anacortes Middle School. The cost was $200 per student for a Full Day which included class instruction, T-Shirt and snacks.
